Before the arrival of the 2002R Mule, there was the CRV Mule which was designed by New Balance Korea’s outdoor-focused division. Thus, it’s region-exclusive release. And in 2019, LIFUL MINIMAL GARMENTS released their own iteration of the pair reminiscent of Reebok’s Beatnik.

With the proliferation of the “anti-sneaker”—thanks to Crocs and the like—the Boston shoemaker has decided it’s time for an update. Introducing: the New Balance CRV Mule v2.

Four colorways are currently listed on NB Korea’s website: Black, Grey, Yellow, and Ivory; and are reserved exclusively for members. They arrive with a slightly more bulk than their predecessor. Featuring a ripstop nylon base on the upper, they’re equipped with striped hiking laces corresponding to their titular colors. The “N” branding on the profiles is made of woven straps that double up as eyelets to secure the feet.

Other branding elements arrive on the tongue tag, footbed, the lateral midsole, and outsole underfoot. With the absence of the back trap, the pull tab finds it placement on the heel instead. All of the above mentioned sits atop an anti-slip rubber sole, borrowing from the 990v1 and CT300—a testament to its outdoor-worthy capabilities.

They’re currently available only at New Balance Korea for 99,000 KRW (~US$75). Make haste, at the time of writing, two colorways are already sold out—proof of New Balance’s strong presence in the footwear landscape.
