Sneaker Details

Following their ra(t)ical collaboration with atmos, New Balance invites up and coming artist Bryant Giles to work on their sneaker canvases. Enigmatic and illustrious characterises Giles’ works, which often feature a mix of bodies and objects, or even body-as-objects. It is no surprise then that his collaboration with the New Balance 2002R and 2002RM would feature illustrations of facial features, people and geometric shapes.

In the New Balance 2002R, an olive green canvas covers the entire upper while the sole remains an off-white. On this earthy palette are embroidered eyes, mouths and noses in muted and loud colors alike. The iconic “N” logo takes on a velcro twist in Giles’ vision, making it a removable woolen patch. Stitched subtly in a lighter green on the heel is the words “What Now?” — a nod to his newest piece that made an appearance at Miami Art Basel. His artwork, reminiscent of those found in his gallery, is also displayed on the insole.

Following this olive New Balance 2002R is a neutral, off-white mule version. Dubbed the New Balance 2002RM, it’s an easy slip-on piece that slides right into anyone’s wardrobe. Similar motifs of facial features are also embroidered on this mule, albeit less disjointed than the ones appearing on the 2002R. Gile’s mosaic art is also featured on the insole to round out the look.
