Since the revival of the New Balance 2002R under Teddy Santis’ creative helm, the model has been a popular canvas for collaborators to unleash their artistic innovations. The silhouette’s versatility allowed it to enjoy a luxurious revamp from the high end AURALEE to a contemporary overhaul under the street-cool thisisneverthat. But beyond designer brands, New Balance also has a penchant for working with established retailers like BEAMS and Bodega, as well as smaller stores like Melbourne’s Up There. And for good reason — the first-ever Up There x New Balance 2002R was exclusive and desirable, so it’s no surprise that a sequel has been announced.
While the first edition saw the 2002R swathed in an eggplant-reminiscent palette, this sequel veers the model into the burgundy-wine-on-white-sheets territory. A white mesh acts as a base while the burgundy red suede wrap around the the toecap and panels. White suede also intersect through the upper, effectively creating a pleasing contrast. Subtly, a yolky yellow makes an appearance on the heel. Similar to their previous workings, Up There makes their down under mark on the crossed tongue with a “New Balance AU” branding.
This upcoming Up There x New Balance 2002R “Backyard Legends II” will be reaching Up There store soon. In the meantime, look to the slider for sneak peeks courtesy of @le.syndrome.
