Sneaker of the Century: Maison Margiela x Reebok TZ Pump
The classic '90s design continues the trend of worn-out sneakers in three colorways.
Who would have guessed that 2022 would be the year of worn-out shoes, what with Balenciaga’s Paris shoe making headlines and its reinterpretation of the most recent adidas Stan Smith release. Maison Margiela is maintaining the chaos with Reebok on its TZ Pump Deadstock without growing fatigued.
John Galliano, the creative director at the French luxury brand, emphasizes deconstruction by replicating the transformative hydrolysis procedure, or the slow chemical deterioration of PU polymer over many years as the base.
This updated model has a distressed and stained old top, a hand-painted broken midsole, and a still-crumbly brilliant orange symbol that reads “The Pump” on the tongue. The sneaker’s entire design is more than it appears to be; it is a masterful artwork that depicts a time in history.
Reuniting for Fall/Winter 2022, Maison Margiela x Reebok TZ Pump Deadstock has unveiled a trio of pre-scuffed TZ Pumps that will be available online for US$1150 starting on 18 November and coming in colors of red, green, and blue. It is made available on Maison Margiela’s brick-and-click.
