Though Zion Williamson has unfortunately been absent from the court the past season, he hasn’t been lazing around. Besides intense physical rehab and training post-surgery, the 2019 No.1 NBA Draft Pick has been busy designing kicks for Jordan Brand. The Jordan Zion lineup has exploded with popularity following the release of Williamson’s Naruto-inspired colourway trio that released mid-May, and now that the dust has settled, Jordan Brand is making the apt decision to kick it up again with official photos of the Jordan Zion 2 “Voodoo”.

The “Voodoo” colourway uses the complex features of the Jordan Zion 2 to its advantage – creating colour, material and pattern variations across the shoe’s many elements, all of which tie together to make what could be the most interesting Jordan Zion colourway yet. Pulling inspiration from the African-born religion, the design makes many unconventional choices such as using pony hair for the tongues, causing the shoe to seem ‘alive’ as the hair strands shift and overlap the laces.

The upper is a mix of Flax, Muslin and Sesame hemp overlaid with Fauna Brown suede swatches, much like the rough, handwoven texture of Voodoo dolls. The left and right shoes come in mismatched colours, with the upper’s 3 main colours being swapped across each side.

Other Voodoo elements include embroidered icons representing a Voodoo doll on each shoe’s heel that use a sown-on button for an eye, as well as embroidered hashes, crosses and thick cross-stitching between material blocks to drive home the superstitious reference. Finally, the design contains easter eggs such as “ZION” and “VOODOO” text written using illustrations of bones, skulls and sown doll faces. Overall, the Jordan Zion 2 “Voodoo” a fascinating colourway that’s chock-full of references, and this complicated package comes served in a custom shoe box enclosed in a themed sleeve warning its beholder, “DO NOT OPEN”.

Not much is known about the release of Jordan Zion 2 “Voodoo” besides the expected release date of 22 June, though there is a chance that it might be delayed. Jordan Brand will likely disclose more official details as the launch date draws closer, so stay tuned!
