[Pokémon TCG] The Truth About Penny Is Alluded to in This Card (Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] 354/190)
While not explicitly stated, this card does contain certain hints related to Penny's alter ego.
Following her introduction to the Pokémon series in the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet video games as one of the three deuteragonists of separate story arcs, Penny almost immediately became one of the newest Pokémon generation’s most popular characters. The major appeal of this Special Art Rare (SAR) Penny card from the Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] Pokémon TCG expansion set is further proof of this fact.
In several ways, this card’s illustration is very much a character-establishing one. In the card’s artwork, Penny is giving a side glance, likely alluding to the fact that in the video games, she is not “who she seems to be”. After all, it isn’t until late into the game’s storyline that Penny is revealed to have the alter ego of Cassiopeia, the leader of the villainous Team Star.
In addition to the value boosts that this card already gets from having the SAR rarity, depicting a female character, and being a Full Art card, there are additional details that further jack up the card’s value. Penny’s Eevee-shaped backpack can clearly be seen in the image. In addition to adding further details about the character—Penny’s favorite Pokémon are Eevee and its evolution—Eevee is a perennial fan favorite, so its presence, even if an indirect one, is sure to pique interest.
On that same note, in the bottom-right corner of the card is Penny’s Umbreon. One of the eight Eeveelutions, Umbreon’s appearance on the card artwork also serves to make this card even more desired. For further character development, Penny’s closeness to her Dark-type Pokémon is also portrayed through Umbreon’s upward gaze at its trainer.
In English, this card is card 239/091 of the Paldean Fates [PAF] set.
The latest figures place the price of a Penny (Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] 354/190) card of SAR rarity costs ¥8,480 (~US$57).
