Debuting in 1998, The Powerpuff Girls has been a mainstay in the pop culture zeitgeist for 25 years. The show has continued its evolution in the succeeding decades (with even a planned live-action adaptation at one point), but one shouldn’t remiss the plethora of collaborations in perpetuating its relevancy, finding audiences across generations.

There have been many superhero sneaker collaborations this year. Yet none has been quite as galvanizing as the three Powerpuff Girls x Nike SB Dunk Lows, scheduled for release on 14 December. Teased more than half a year earlier, the months-long wait has become weeks and soon enough, days.

While waiting for the The Powerpuff Hotline to ring you about the Nike SBs, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have been busy with other endeavors.

■ CASETiFY

June 2023

Back in June, CASETiFY released their first collection of phone cases and other tech items in collaboration with the three superhero kindergarteners (and their arch-villains).

Accompanying the variety of CASETiFY signature phone cases, there were also Apple Watch bands, wireless chargers, iPad cases, AirPods cases, MacBook and Nintendo Switch carrying cases, and AirTags holders. With these accessories, phones become more than a connection to the world, but also a connection to fans’ childhood.

Between a design that highlight their favorite of the three sisters, or better yet, one with all three in action, there’s the sticker-inspired design that portrays other iconic images and characters like Mojo Jojo, HIM, Chemical X, The Professor, and the Mayor.

■ Justice

July 2023

Justice, a leading fashion and lifestyle brand for tween girls, partnered with The Powerpuff Girls for a Walmart exclusive back-to-school fashion collection in celebration of the animated series’ 25th anniversary.

Channeling the excitement of motor racing, vibrant turquoise, pink, and checkerboard patterns adorn the range of mix-and-match outfits, including printed denim, a varsity jacket, a ’90s-inspired two-piece dress, fleece sets, T-shirts, backpacks, and pajamas.

■ NewJeans x LINE FRIENDS

September 2023

NewJeans is currently one of K-pop’s hottest girls groups, and that has garnered them a variety of collaborations with some of the world’s biggest brands, traversing the realms of fashion, food, and tech.

Among them is LINE FRIENDS, a partnership that produced a plethora of merch in conjunction with The Powerpuff Girls. Their music video for “New Jeans” even saw the girls transform as superheroes, animated akin to the cartoon.

Initially unveiled by way of a pop-up experience in Seoul, the collection subsequently received a global release online with various pop-ups erected in other regions such as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

The Powerpuff Girls x NewJeans x LINE FRIENDS collection included t-shirts, caps, phone cases, keychains, stickers, in addition to a cornucopia of other accessories.

■ Nike SB Dunk Low

December 2023

The rumor mill churned out the Powerpuff Girls x Nike SB Dunk Low collaboration in as early as March, almost a full nine months before its scheduled release date. In that span, mockups, leaked, and on-feet images from Instagram’s premier sneaker leakers gradually unravelled the pairs.

The first full look arrived with the “Blossom” colorway, revealing an all-over suede shoe with predominantly pink hues accented by orange and black. The black outlining each panel, adjacent to the orange Swooshes and laces.

Later images of the “Blossom” and “Buttercup” pairs adopts the same design cues, but heavily deviate in terms of construction with each pair featuring a different base material. The palette corresponds to the titular characters’ with PPG detailing distinct between all three.

The collaborative PPG x Nike SB trio will be released on 14 December with a price tag of US$135 each. Getting the pair will surely be challenging. You’re not just vying against sneakerheads, you’ll be vying against nostalgic fans, boys and girls, eager to own a tangible keepsake from their childhood.

The Powerpuff Girls has been rebooted multiple times, most recently in 2016. It’s a testament to the show’s longevity and enduring appeal—its timeless positive messages, humor, and its art style. As the show continues to evolve, it will garner new fans from a different generation. And with these collaborations, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup will live on, even when the showrunners someday decide its time to hang the cape.
