Converse is a legacy brand that’s cemented there place in the pantheon of footwear. Although these days they’re mostly known for their classic staples like the Chuck Taylors, there’s more “gunpowder” in the ignition to propel them forward. The same way parent company Nike retrofits their older models, the same with Converse. Case in point: the incoming “Star Cruiser” collection.

The first wave of the collection includes three colorways of the Starfire SC J, debuting in “Gray/Black”, “Apple Green”, and “Vintage Navy”. The new model, made in Japan, is an update on their 1977 Starfire silhouette. A design reflective of the running shoes from decades past, ones like Nike’s Waffle Trainer. More than 40 years later, it gets retrofitted with a modern sole unit.

Integrated with VIBRAM® Megagrip and VIBRAM®︎ EVA, the contemporary tooling gives the pairs a high resilience, all-weather comfort. As below and so above, the upper is constructed with a Cordura lip nylon at the base with various suede overlays traversing from the mudguard, eyestays, through to the heel.

Its technical features are sound, and aesthetically, it retains much of its vintage appeal. The signature chevron and one star on the profile maintains its leather make with the standard tongue tag presiding over it. One more notable addition is the rubber mould at the heel for enhanced arch support.

The pair will be available on Converse Japan’s website from 17 March with a price tag of JPY22,000 (~US$160).
