From rapper, to producer, to fashion designer, Pharrell Williams goes by a lot of titles these days. The Virginia-born superstar has dabbled in music, film, fashion and entrepreneurship throughout his 30 or so years as a professional. But this year might just be his biggest challenge yet.

Today, Pharrell Williams was officially appointed as the new creative director for Louis Vuitton’s menswear line. Pharrell will be the brand’s first permanent head of menswear since the passing of the late Virgil Abloh in 2021, although Pharrell’s title of “creative director” differs slightly from Abloh’s “artistic director”.

Ultimately, they mean the same thing. Taking over the reigns at one of the biggest fashion brands in the world is certainly an achievement like no other, and a lot of expectation comes with the role—especially after how successful Abloh was in the position.

Pharell’s appointment also comes as a shock to many in the fashion world. Coming as a bit of a surprise pick, other big-name designers such as Martine Rose, Colm Dillane and Graces Wales Bonner have been touted to take the vacant position throughout 2022, only for the French fashion house to pick Pharell instead.

The decision to appoint Pharrell has been met with both praise and disdain on social media. Some were obviously excited about the new successor being in a rather similar mold to Abloh in terms of artistic direction. Others were disappointed that a celebrity producer had been chosen ahead of other more established designers, such as the aforementioned names.

That being said, Pharrell is no slouch when it comes to the fashion world. In 2003, Pharrell started the Billionaire Boys Club label with Nigo, who now serves as Kenzo‘s artistic director. He has also collaborated with Louis Vuitton in in 2004 and 2008, and more recently worked with the likes of Chanel and Moncler.

Coming into the fray almost immediately, Pharrell will debut his first Louis Vuitton collection this June during the Men’s Fashion Week in Paris, as announced by the brand on Instagram. Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s newly appointed Chairman and CEO, said “His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter.”

It’s definitely going to be exciting times for both the brand and Pharrell, one filled with intrigue and anticipation come summer when he releases his first collection. Pharrell certainly has big boots to fill, and only time will tell if he can live up to the prestige and pedigree that comes with the role.
