This New Balance 1906R Throws Us Back to the 2000s
Taking "dad shoes" to the next level.
Out with the new, in with the old. The resident “old school” brand among the industry’s top dogs is back with another wild throwback to the 2000s, in the form of their latest New Balance 1906R offering.
Debuting in 2010 as a premium running shoe, the 1906R, much like many of its siblings in the New Balance family, became a lifestyle statement around the same time similar athletic sneakers came back in vogue. New Balance has revitalised the 1906R through collaborations with famed streetwear brands such as South Korea’s thisisneverthat and Japan’s N.HOOLYWOOD and Invincible last year, further creating fanfare over one of its older models.
This time, the 1906R takes a trip down memory lane, going back to the 2000s. Dressed mainly in metallic-silver, this new colorway screams Y2K from tip to heel. While both the underlying mesh layer and leather overlays carry the silver detailing, hints of blue accentuate the shoe, coupled with a dose of jet black on its famous “N” logo, heel overlay and lining.
While we’re marvelling over distinctive aesthetics of this upcoming 1906R, it’s also worth mentioning that Kenzo’s unreleased running shoes carry a very similar vibe, utilising the same color scheme as the aforementioned sneaker. It’s a testament to how brands in the modern era are trying to encapsulate the retro-ness of the 2000s, given its recent resurgence as a trend in recent years.
