[Yu-Gi-Oh TCG] A-Bao A Qu, the Lightless Shadow (Supreme Darkness SUDA-JP049) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
Very few will likely have recognized the original reference around which this card is based—so props to those who did.
When the cards from Supreme Darkness, the newest Yu-Gi-Oh TCG set, were revealed, many wondered just what would end up being the second-biggest pull behind Paladins of Bonds and Unity, the set’s designated Quarter Century Secret Rare-exclusive card. As things have turned out, that card is A-Bao A Qu, the Lightless Shadow.
About A-Bao A Qu, the Lightless Shadow (Supreme Darkness SUDA-JP049)
Although A-Bao A Qu, the Lightless Shadow can come in Quarter Century Secret Rare, that isn’t the only reason behind its sizable price tag. Not only does the card depicts a female character which inherently grants it a value boost; the character in question is also one of a specific character and aesthetic archetype which will appeal to a wide swathe of Yu-Gi-Oh fans.
The character depicted on this card is based on the Á Bao A Qu, a mythical creature from the universe of the Book of Imaginary Beings, written by Jorge Luis Borges. In the book, the Á Bao A Qu lives at the bottom of the spiral staircase of the Tower of Victory. Alluding to this, a spiral staircase can clearly be seen in the background of the card’s illustration.
