[ONE PIECE Card Game] The Closest and the Strongest: Edward Newgate (Paramount War [OP-02] OP02-001)
Sometimes, even the most basic-looking cards can be seriously solid pulls.
In One Piece’s canon, Edward Newgate, the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, was one of the most legendary figures prior to his death during the Summit War of Marineford. After all, he wasn’t nicknamed “The Man Closest to One Piece” and “The Strongest Man in the World” within the series’ universe for nothing. Referencing the theme of the ONE PIECE Card Game booster pack Paramount War [OP-02], this card featuring Newgate is based on his role during the Marineford Arc.
The card’s illustration implies how close Newgate came to discovering the One Piece itself. Maps and diagrams line the back of the card—these likely detail Newgate’s ultimately ill-fated quest. A close-up angle of Newgate’s face is used; this is a reference to Newgate’s nickname of “Whitebeard”.
While on the surface, there doesn’t seem to be much else driving up this card’s value, Newgate as a character gained a degree of cachet among the fanbase after Universal Studios Japan put up two memorials—one in his honor, the other for Portgas D. Ace. This undoubtedly elevated his status within the fandom.
This card has been released in English.
One copy of an Edward Newgate (Paramount War [OP-02] OP02-001) card of LP rarity sells for 3,600 JPY (~US$23).
