It’s always a cause for excitement when cult Japanese labels Mastermind and Suicoke get together, especially if black, skulls and punk culture are your aesthetic of choice. Their previous collaboration saw co-branded Suicoke KAW sandals that incorporated the signature cool black of Suicoke and Mastermind’s tasteful skulls.
Not disappointing fans familiar with this look, their reunion in 2022 sees a custom TAMOTT silhouette with a plush velcro upper branded with Mastermind’s skull. This is a departure from usual Suicoke styles, which typically sees adjustable straps with hardware or buckles.
Accompanying this pair of slides is also a line of co-branded streetwear that was created with the help of Canadian manufacturer Roopa Knitting Mills. The collection of hoodies, T-shirts and pants are simple and straightforward: Mastermind’s skull dons the front while both brand’s logos finds a comfortable spot on the back. The understated nature of this collaboration is reminiscent of the “silent streetwear” wave that swept over street fashion in 2020, stifling “hype” brands towards minimalist branding. Think Yeezy, Fear of God and 1017 Alyx 9SM.
This Mastermind World x Suicoke collection drops on 26 July on Suicoke’s website. The slides will retail for ¥24,200 (~US$178) while the apparel ranges from ¥12,100 to ¥27,500 (~US$89 to ~US$202).
