[ONE PIECE Card Game] Monkey D. Luffy (Emperors in the New World [OP-09] OP09-119) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
For the second time, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates is on a Manga Rare.
For the second time, One Piece protagonist Monkey D. Luffy has been featured on a ONE PIECE Card Game Manga Rare card. The first time around, Luffy was shown in his now-iconic Gear 5 form which was revealed close the end of the manga’s Wano Country Arc. While he isn’t shown in that form this time around, this new Luffy Manga Rare is sure to be a megahit nonetheless.
About Monkey D. Luffy (Emperors in the New World [OP-09] OP09-119)
It’s not surprising that a Manga Rare card would end up becoming exceptionally coveted and thus valuable—especially one featuring Luffy. On the illustration of this Secret Rare Super Parallel (SEC-SP), Luffy’s left hand is shown covered in Haki, the mysterious power which in the One Piece universe is derived from one’s spiritual energy and ambition, only harnessed by a few. This is a canonically-relevant detail because at this point in the manga, it’s implied that (SPOILER) Luffy will need to maximize his Haki capabilities if he is to stand any chance of claiming the One Piece and the title of the new King of the Pirates. (END SPOILER)
There’s also a nod to Luffy in his Gear 5 form in which he takes on the powers of Nika, the One Piece universe’s Sun God. This can be seen in the bottom-left corner of the background where a manga panel of Luffy in his Gear 5 form has been placed. This is also relevant to this set because Emperors in the New World [OP-09] is a set based on the Four Emperors. It was only after Luffy defeated Kaido at the end of the Wano Country Arc after having made it to Gear 5 that he was named a member of the canon’s most powerful quartet.
Release Details
Like the rest of Emperors in the New World [OP-09], this card’s English release will be in December 2024.
As might be expected, a Monkey D. Luffy (Emperors in the New World [OP-09] OP09-119) card of SEC-SP goes for more than just a little coin—a copy carries a price tag of a whopping 250,000 JPY (~US$1,721)!
