[Pokémon TCG] Neo Upper Energy Doubles Up on the Energy Count (Wild Force [SV5K] 071/071)
It took the emergence of the Dragapult ex deck for this card's true potential to be unlocked.
When it was first released as part of the Wild Force [SV5K] set, Neo Upper Energy went almost completely unused in Pokémon TCG tournament play. However, the release of Mask of Change [SV6] and its Dragapult ex card brought Neo Upper Energy to the forefront of the metagame; it became a key component of a Dragapult ex deck variant.
Neo Upper Energy is an ACE SPEC card that ordinarily supplies one Energy to the Pokémon to which it’s attached. However, this isn’t the case with Stage 2 Pokémon. When Neo Upper Energy is attached to a Stage 2 Pokémon, that Pokémon receives two of every Energy type at the same time.
This feature makes it ideal for the Dragapult ex deck. While Dragapult ex’s Phantom Dive ex deck usually requires just two Energy cards, they have to specifically be one Fire and one Psychic Energy. However, since Dragapult ex is a Stage 2 Pokémon, attaching Neo Upper Energy allows Dragapult ex to bypass the Energy type requirements and unleash its attack dealing 200 damage just like that. Although the variant featuring Neo Upper Energy isn’t yet the dominant Dragapult ex deck variant, it’s nonetheless gaining traction at an impressive rate for good reason.
The English version of this card is card 162/162 in the Temporal Forces [TEF] set.
A copy of a Neo Upper Energy (Wild Force [SV5K] 071/071) card has a price tag of 1,810 JPY (~US$11).
