[Pokémon TCG] The Rise of the Raging Bolt ex Deck Has Spotlighted Squawkabilly ex (Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] 337/190)
Proof that the release of new sets, even without any related cards, can fundamentally alter a specific card's gameplay viability.
Prior to the release of Mask of Change [SV6], the Squawkabilly ex card first printed in Snow Hazard [SV2P] was seen in several metagame-relevant decks—most notably the Miraidon ex deck—but was never really regarded as one of the Pokémon TCG meta’s best support cards. However, when Mask of Change [SV6] dropped, the Raging Bolt ex deck almost immediately became one of the best decks in the meta. This in turn brought countless eyes to this once-unassuming Normal/Flying-type Pokémon.
Squawkabilly ex is one of the Raging Bolt ex deck’s primary draw engines by way of its Ability of Squawk and Seize; that Ability enables the player to discard the entire hand and draw 6 cards. once per turn Together with the Teal Mask Ogerpon ex card from Mask of Change [SV6] as well as the Radiant Greninja card from Battle Region [S9a], Squawkabilly ex makes it much easier for players to obtain that all-important Professor Sada’s Vitality, a Supporter card introduced in Ancient Roar [SV4K], as soon as possible.
While having become Squawkabilly ex’s primary application, the Raging Bolt ex deck isn’t the only deck in which the Parrot Pokémon has a major role to play. Squawkabilly ex is also a key card in the Miraidon ex, Roaring Moon ex, and Arceus VSTAR/Armarouge ex decks.
For collectors, the version of this card to seek is the Shiny Secret Rare (SSR) Squawkabilly ex card from Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a]. That card, as implied by its rarity, depicts Squawkabilly ex in its Shiny form. The stars and sparkles in the background of the illustration add to the visual effect; they’re also allusions to the visual effect that can be seen in the Pokémon video games when a Shiny Pokémon is sent into combat.
The English version of this card is card 223/091 in the Paldean Fates [PAF] set.
A copy of a Squawkabilly ex (Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] 337/190) card sells for 2,290 JPY (~US$15).
