Pokémon TCG Gengar VMAX

The eighth generation of Pokémon saw the Dynamax and Gigantamax mechanic added to the Pokémon Sword and Shield video games. After a Pokémon has been Dynamaxed, it temporarily grows to many times larger than its usual sizes, receiving a massive power boost in the process. A select few Pokémon are able to access Gigantamax, a variant of Dynamax. Gengar is one of those Pokémon, and its Gigantamaxed form is displayed on this Pokémon TCG card from the Gengar VMAX High-Class Deck [SGG] in its full glory.

According to Pokémon’s in-universe lore, a Gigantamaxed Gengar is able to absorb souls and, instead of trapping them in its body filled with cursed energy, send them directly to the afterlife. This card’s Full Art illustration directly references this; Gengar VMAX is shown with its gargantuan mouth wide open, about to snatch the souls of any being within its path. The illustration is a clear depiction of the overwhelming otherworldly force unleashed by Gengar VMAX.

Ever since its introduction back in the first generation as the original Ghost-type Pokémon, Gengar has remained highly popular among fans, thus increasing general interest in this card. Additionally, the novelty factor added by the fact that it’s a Gigantamaxed Gengar further increases the demand for this card.

Finally, those who play the video games on at least a semi-serious level will notice that one of the items which Gengar VMAX is shown absorbing is a Leftovers—a staple held item in competitive play of the Pokémon video games. This is a detail which is likely to impress those who came to the TCG from the video games.

The English version of this card is 271/264 in the Fusion Strike set.

The latest prices place the cost of a Gengar VMAX (Gengar VMAX High-Class Deck [SGG] 020/019) card at 43,500 JPY (~US$280).
