[Pokémon TCG] Charizard VMAX Should No Longer Be Overshadowed (Shiny Star V [S4a] 308/190)

Although Charizard ex might spend more time in the spotlight—and deservedly at that—Charizard VMAX shouldn't become an afterthought.

Pokémon TCG Charizard VMAX

At first glance, the Charizard VMAX card from Shiny Star V [S4a] checks all the boxes for becoming one of the most iconic Pokémon TCG cards of all time. This card featuring one of the biggest fan favorites in the entire Pokémon franchise boasts a visually stunning Full Art illustration, a depiction of its Shiny form, an exceptionally high rarity of Shiny Secret Rare (SSR), and even a reasonable level of gameplay viability when it was still tournament-legal. So, what gives?

Well, it’s for the simple fact that Charizard VMAX has been overshadowed by the overwhelming presence of the Charizard ex card from Ruler of the Black Flame [SV3] which to many Pokémon TCG enthusiasts not only outshines this card visually but gameplay-wise, is also objectively one of the greatest Pokémon TCG cards of all time, featuring as the centerpiece of many tournament-winning decks.

That being said, there’s still a lot to like about this Charizard VMAX card. For one thing, not a lot of Pokémon TCG cards showcase a Pokémon’s Shiny form. This feature is further emphasized by the background sparkles. On top of that, Charizard’s black Shiny form is one of the most beloved of all Shinies.

Additionally, that rarity of SSR does a lot for the card’s value. Finally, the illustration’s stunning depiction of a Gigantamaxed Charizard is attention-grabbing to say the least. The giant black dragon is shown emanating fire from its horns and torso to go with its signature tail flame, highlighting the Pokémon’s overwhelming force.

The English version of this card is the SV107/SV122 card in the Shining Fates expansion set.

Buying a Charizard VMAX (Shiny Star V [S4a] 308/190) card costs 8,000 JPY (~US$52).
