[Pokémon TCG] Gyarados Master Ball Mirror: A Gameplay Bust But a Big Pull for Collectors (Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] 130/165)

We're not entirely sure why this card's Master Ball Mirror version became one of the most high-value Master Ball Mirror cards—but it is what it is.

Pokémon TCG Gyarados Master Ball Mirror

In the TCG market, sometimes things happen that almost completely defy explanation—such as the remarkably high value of the Gyarados Master Ball Mirror card from the Pokémon TCG expansion set Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a]. For one thing, gameplay-wise this is arguably the worst Pokémon TCG card of all time and almost certainly the worst of the ninth generation so far.

Additionally, this isn’t even the iconic Shiny version—the Red Gyarados that for so many Pokémon fans is the definitive Shiny Pokémon. In spite of these drawbacks, this Gyarados card has somehow seen its status ascend, becoming among the highest-value cards of Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a].

That being said, the card’s illustration does stand out—featuring the Water/Flying-type emerging from the waves, about to unleash a torrent of destruction. It captures the pure fury and violence which has come to define Gyarados.

The fact that it’s a Master Ball Mirror card does elevate its value as well, since this print is significantly rarer than its ordinary counterpart.

This card’s English version is 130/165 of the 151 [MEW] set.

The retail price of a Gyarados Master Ball Mirror (Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] 130/165) card is 8,000 JPY (~US$53).
