After 20 Years, ASICS Revamps the GEL-1090
Introducing the ASICS GEL-1090 V2 featuring updated specs.
It looks like there’s no stopping ASICS. Over the weekend, the footwear giant dropped its newest lifestyle silhouette, the ASICS GEL-NYC; this will be followed by another hotly anticipated ASICS GEL-SONOMA 15-50 collab with South Korean label Matin Kim in a few days’ time.
And ASICS is not showing any signs of slowing down. The Japanese brand has been quietly revisiting some of its archival models, reinterpreting them through a more “modern lens”. One such sneaker: the ASICS GEL-1090 V2.
2023 marks the 20th year since the GEL-1090 first debuted. Now, with an updated “V2” moniker, the silhouette has been given a contemporary update with the help of plush suede overlays and additional loops at the tongue and heel.
Another interesting detail is the switching to a square mesh upper from ASICS’ usual round-shaped versions. Underneath the midsole’s sweeping line design, which is a reference to a waving checkered flag in motion, the proprietary GEL technology returns as the shoe’s mainstay cushioning feature.
The ASICS GEL-1090 V2 was introduced to us last year through the brand’s collab with Copenhagen “it” girl Freja Wewer and saw the model don on a futuristic metallic silver outfit. For its own inhouse GEL-1090 V2s, ASICS has chosen to tone it down with multiple neutral-hued offerings.
Seen here are the ASICS GEL-1090 V2 in “Cream/Clay Grey” and “Mid Grey/Oatmeal”, both swathed in the aforementioned suede overlays and re-engineered mesh uppers.
The ASICS GEL-1090 V2 is a simple but clever and timely update to an almost-forgotten model—we can’t help but wonder what the ASICS team is going to bring to the table next.
