[Update 1 Mar 2023] Barely after Edison Chen rocked the upcoming CLOT x Nike Cortez “Bruce Lee” on Instagram, official images from the Swoosh brand has landed. Through the photos, we get to take a better look at all the variations of the “Bruce Lee”, as well as the inclusion of a special box similar to its black-and-white predecessor. Stay tuned as we’ll bring you the latest regarding its release as soon as we get them.
CLOT’s collaborative portfolio with Nike grows every year. Some may be divisive, but each one is undisputedly creative, daring enough to push towards terra incognita when it comes to the most recognizable classics.
Think of how they added the hangtag to their Jordan Delta 2 in place of the hallmark holographic feature of the Air Jordan 13 “Flint”; the glow-in-the-dark outsoles and satin finish to their Jade 5 Low; and lastly, the modular construction of their Clotez, a retrofitting of one of the world’s most consiquential silhouettes.
Following up on the recent success of the last, comes the “Varsity Maize” colorway. The rumor mill purported that a Clotez trilogy was in the works and the emergence of this sequel ascertains as much. Edison Chen himself has spoken about the pair’s design being derivative of the Kung Fu shoes of the past and the MO is maintained here.
While the palette of the debut takes after the standard Tai Chi shoes, this followup takes after the iconoclastic martial artist and the genre’s quintessence, Bruce Lee and 1979’s Game of Death. Inspiring The Bride’s outfit in Kill Bill, which also inspired the titular shoe.
Conceptualized by Harry Wong, an aspiring designer the CLOT head honcho met at the Nike: On Air contest, the elements remain the same as its predecessor. Embodying the fluidity of Tai Chi, the pair can be taken apart with each component wearable on its own.
The exterior bootie in black can be worn as a slip-on with the signature partial Swoosh and rear midsole lining highlighted in Varsity Maize. The outsole underfoot features the standard serrated pattern. The color is flipped on the interior’s main body. The aforementioned yellow engulfing the full-leather build with the Swooshes in black, which also adorns the laces, tongue tag, as well as the heel counter. Therein, the “功” and “夫” (Kung Fu) embroidery, affixed with a drawstring fastening system with a Yin Yang symbol imprint.
Not much else is known about the pair just yet with the only Rosetta Stone being these images from @whojungwoo. But with Edison Chen himself wearing them, they seem as good as ready for release. When those details surface, expect to find them here so stay tuned!
