Fashion is fickle and cyclical. In a broader sense, it is art, and subjectivity is in the nature of the beast. The Dad Shoe, was an essential for its functionality, more so than its aesthetic appeal. These days, they’re coveted just as much for the latter.
It was once a novelty to wear them in the contemporary age but that novelty’s worn off revealing its new identity as a footwear staple. It’s been trendy for a few years now, a trend perpetuated by the biggest brands. Nike has reintroduced the Zoom Vomero 5s, adidas joined the fray by way of YEEZY, and New Balance—the dad shoe quintessence—was elevated to the stratosphere.
Thus, the latest from Nike: The Runtekk. The lifestyle sneaker is an entirely new silhouette designed with women in mind. It’s retrofuturistic, the convergence of past and the future. Its aesthetic draws from the runners from Y2K’s tech-driven design vocabulary.
It’s well-balanced maximalism. Overdesigned yet the palette, understated. The dad shoe hallmarks are a mainstay on the Runtekk. There’s the double mesh upper in Summit White, the Metallic Silver mudguard and overlays. And further elevating it is the translucent TPU panel installed over the quarter. There sits the metallic Swoosh. Added heel support is integrated through the extended black heel cavity that runs through to the midfoot. All the above sits on a chunky, two-toned sole unit, embodying the design philosophy of the Dad Shoe.
Nike hasn’t acknowledged its existence in any official capacity. But the rumor mill has the shoe purported for release as early as July as part of their Fall 2023 line. It’s expected to run for at least three seasons through to Spring 2024.
More news should arrive within the coming months. Till then, perhaps check out some of the Swoosh’s other upcoming offerings like the Nike Dunk Low “Glow in the Dark”.
