Though Moncler started out as an outdoor wear brand, the Milan-headquartered fashion house has established itself as a fixture in the luxury segment enjoyed by rappers, hip hop aficionados and streetwear devotees. Its influence in the industry was attested to in SS23 show — a celebration of its 70th anniversary, 18000 attendees were invited while over a thousand models lined up in the brand’s iconic Maya puffer jacket.

But beyond the runway, Moncler also taps into its Moncler Genius project—which doles out lines of apparels with collaborative partners—for the festivities. Namely, 7 designers were invited to reinterpret the Maya down jacket. Following Thom Browne and Palm Angels, Hiroshi Fujiwara’s fragment design is the next creative partner enlisted to rework the fashionable piece.

And per fragment’s penchant for utility, the Maya jacket has been made sleeker with a varsity touch, creating a collaborative piece that’s timeless in its design and functional in its wear. The most distinct change is the modified raglan shoulder structure and the varsity jacket sleeves. Sealing in the collegiate aesthetic is the use of chenille on the Moncler logo and FRGMT wordmark across the back. Though the Maya jacket’s overall silhouette has been maintained, the volume of down has also been reduced, producing a sleeker approach to puffers as compared to Moncler’s usual high-gloss shine and high-volume bulk.

Accompanying this Maya Jacket is also a fragment design x Moncler TrailGrip GTX High that’s slated to drop exclusively on Dover Street Market. Contrasting the chic black of the varsity-style Maya jacket, this trail shoe previewed by Nathan VanHook, Moncler’s footwear designer, is bold and flamboyant. Yellow leather dominates the upper while red laces are strapped across the shoe. Fragment logos are prominently debossed into the heel and tongue. This GORE-TEX infused shoe rounds out its design with trail appropriate grips and dashes of red on the outsole.

This functional-but-aesthetic fragment design x Moncler Maya jacket is slated for a release on 29 October, and it is likely that the collaborative TrailGrip GTX High will also drop then.

ICYMI, fragment design is also reuniting with Travis Scott and Nike to release another triple threat.
