Japanese brand Asics incorporates its cultural roots with their newest “Monozukuri Pack”, which features a redesign of the ASICS SportStyle GEL-1130 and GEL-Nimbus 9. The word “monozukuri” refers to a Japanese style of manufacturing is dedicated to craftsmanship, continuous improvement and technical improvements. Such a spirit is found within the traditional art of Kendo, which principles surround self-improvement and the cultivation of skill.
Connecting the “monozukuri” concept with Kendo is the intention behind this pack, which overhauls Asics’ sport performance shoes with materials and colors inspired by Kendo armor. In the GEL-Nimbus 9, Kendo elements manifest in the textured fabric of the upper. The diamond textile represents the bogu kimonos that skilled swordsmen would don as armor. The accompanying laces are a reference to the kimono’s unique belted design. Kendo techniques often require strict precision, and this spirit is seen through the shoe’s clean cut and smooth contrasts of leather layers.
In similar fashion, the GEL-1130 has the same upper textile and lace webbing. Imbued within the tech is also the “monozukuri” ethos of continuous improvement. As the ninth iteration of the GEL-1000 series, this GEL-1130 swaps out its traditional materials for synthetic leather paneling, modernising its aesthetic. Performance-wise, the runner’s comfort remains a core motivation, and the heel’s GEL technology provides all-day cushioning.
ASICS Monozukuri Pack is available on their official site and Atmos. The GEL-Nimbus 9 retails at USD$250 while the GEL-1130 is priced at USD$170.
