Prior to founding Sneaker Politics, one of the most well-respected sneaker boutiques, Derek Curry was a soldier in the US Army. During his 9-month deployment in Iraq, Curry learned valuable lessons and gained core values that he later poured into his business.

Curry’s Army unit’s motto was “Toujours Pret”, which means “Always Ready”. As such, the GEL-Lyte III “Always Ready” is his way of sharing his meaningful experience in the military with the world. Of course, many veterans and military personnel would personally relate to the message the sneaker represents.

The sneaker’s design contains many details inspired by military gear and service attire, as well as Sneaker Politics-related elements. The boutique store’s “P” logo makes its mark below ASICS’ yellow logo on the heel tab. Besides the black ASICS stripes, off-white laces and midsoles, the shoe mainly comprises of olive green military drab. A mix of suede and canvas provides rugged yet comfortable textures, similar to a well-worn military uniform. Also similar to military uniforms, there are interchangeable velcro patches, with choices between “GEL LYTE III”, “POLITICS” and a bright red Sneaker Politics patch. Various other elements break through the military colours, such as the US flag swatches on the toe-box, as well as yellow and white sections of the outsole. The shoes are delivered with a dog-tag stamped with “POLITICS” branding and military five-pointed stars.

The collaboration will see a staggered release – an early release on 27 May exclusively for Veterans and active-duty military staff who present a valid ID in Sneaker Politics stores, then a second early release on 28 May exclusively for Sneaker Politics stores. The GEL-Lyte III “Always Ready” will then drop on Sneaker Politics and ASICS online stores on 30 May, 10:00 AM ET. Finally, a wider release will happen at select ASICS stockists on 11 June.
