For OG New Balance fans, the 574s will hold a special place. Introduced as an economy runner, its lower price point but reliable tech made it a popular lifestyle choice for the frequent pedestrian. However, since its inception in 1988, New Balance and 574 in particular have garnered a “something my dad would wear” reputation that has been hard to shake off.

Though there’s certainly a market that enjoys the retro aesthetic, New Balance has enlisted BEAMS BOY to inject a youthful spirit back to the classic model. For the unacquainted, BEAMS BOY is Japanese retailer BEAMS’ subsidiary label that tailors heavy duty styles for the feminine. They are particularly deft at adding a playful spin on sensible, timeless pieces — perfect collaborators for the 574, don’t you think?

And just like how burger chains tend to double their classics (looking at you, Double Cheeseburger), BEAMS BOY doubles the color offerings on its collaborative 574 Legacy. Atop smooth white leather are collegiate yellow pipings on one feet and varsity green on the other. These accenting colors are found on the N logo, heel branding, shoelace aglets, and on the insoles. The effect is a mismatched look that’s fun-loving but still elegant. Definitely more modern than the usual 574, that’s for sure!

This BEAMS BOY x New Balance U574L will be available in late October. It retails for JPY14,850 (~US$104).

In other colorful New Balances, check out this 9060 that’s multi-colored in every sense.
