[Pokémon TCG] The Klawf/Terapagos ex Deck Manipulates Poisoning to Maximum Effect

Poison the opponent's Active 'mon? That's 70 extra damage. Poison your own? How about a power boost of 160?

[Update 25 Mar 2025] Just as rapidly as this deck climbed to the top of the meta, it will now likely fall from its spot just like that. This is because rotation, which has already been implemented in Japan and will be active internationally from 11 April, will remove the Double Turbo Energy card from Star Birth [S9] from this deck—an essential part of its strategy.

[Update 24 Feb 2025] This deck’s ascension to the peak of the Pokémon TCG metagame is now complete following Japanese player Ryuki Okada’s victory at the Pokémon Europe International Championships (EUIC) in London. Notably, both of Okada’s wins in his 2-1 best-of-3 triumph came via “donk”—the term used to describe a win clinched on the player’s first turn before the opponent even has a chance to do anything.

[Update 6 Feb 2025] A new variant of this deck includes the highly splashable Budew card from Terastal Festival ex [SV8a]. Ideally, Budew would be played on the player’s first turn in order to provide the player with an advantage with regard to the Prize card trade. The inclusion of Budew also assists the Klawf/Terapagos ex deck with matchups against evolution decks built around evolved Pokémon which evolve from low-HP Basics.

Ideally, the player should go second in order to get the best possible use out of the variant of this deck which includes Budew.

Pokémon TCG Klawf/Terapagos ex Deck

Prior to the international release of Surging Sparks [SSP], decks built around the Klawf card from Raging Surf [SV3a] were seen as “unserious” picks which would only be viable in very specific scenarios. As such, the deck saw almost no tournament use at all until the Pokémon Latin America International Championships (LAIC) in November 2024. The very next tournament was the Sacramento Regionals which saw a handful of players add the Terapagos ex card from Stellar Miracle [SV7] to the Klawf deck—and since then, the Klawf/Terapagos ex deck has become legit.

Strategy

The Terapagos ex card from Stellar Miracle [SV7] is the deck’s primary attacker by way of its Unified Beatdown attack. With the assistance of Area Zero Underdepths from Stellar Miracle [SV7] and Double Turbo Energy from Star Birth [S9], Terapagos ex could potentially unleash up to 220 damage for just one Energy card, potentially putting even some of the opponent’s multi-Prize Pokémon in danger of being one-shotted before they can even be properly set up.

Klawf, the deck’s other titular card, makes use of its Unhinged Scissors attack to deal serious damage of its own. The player first uses Toxic Powder, the Ability of the Brute Bonnet card from Ancient Roar [SV4K], to poison Klawf as well as the opposing Active Pokémon. When poisoned and with one Double Turbo Energy card attached, Klawf can attack with Unhinged Scissors to strike for 170 damage. Adding to the impact of Toxic Powder are Radiant Hisuian Sneasler from Dark Phantasma [S10a] and Pecharunt from Super Electric Breaker [SV8] which together, add as much as 70 more damage between turns to the opposing Active Pokémon when it’s poisoned.

The deck’s most important Item card is Precious Trolley from Stellar Tera Type Starter Set Sylveon ex [SVLN]. Ideally, this card would be played in the early game, right after Area Zero Underdepths is played. By doing so, the player can load up the Bench with Basic Pokémon and thus power up Terapagos ex’s Unified Beatdown in a hurry.

Price

The total cost of all the cards in the Klawf/Terapagos ex deck is at least 12,370 JPY (~US$81).
