[Yu-Gi-Oh TCG] Zoodiac Barrage (Raging Tempest RATE-JP059) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
That's right. This was unbanned without unbanning Zoodiac Drident as well.
As part of the latest wave of Yu-Gi-Oh TCG card ban and restriction updates for tournaments outside Japan and Asia-Pacific, Zoodiac Barrage received an unban. Now, one copy of the card can legally be placed in any tournament deck in the relevant regions. While it’s certainly true that the metagame is now at a point where most of the Zoodiac cards which were once deemed “broken” no longer are, the Western unban of Zoodiac Barrage nevertheless received a somewhat mixed reception from the community.
About Zoodiac Barrage (Raging Tempest RATE-JP059)
In the metagame of Japan and Asia-Pacific, Zoodiac decks are regarded as no more than rogue, off-meta picks that don’t “break the game” in the way they once did. Years ago, Zoodiac decks containing Zoodiac Barrage and Zoodiac Drident, another Raging Tempest card, were entirely immune to most hand traps, could take the player through an entire end-game board with just one card, and had an excess of disruption, and/or extension options. However, in today’s metagame, this isn’t the case anymore as the deck has been powercrept, especially by the Ryzeal deck. This is the main reason why Zoodiac Barrage was unbanned—in a vacuum, this was a decision that most would’ve agreed with.
However, the controversy that arose surrounded the fact that Zoodiac Drident remained banned outside Japan and Asia-Pacific; it has already been unbanned in the East. The general consensus is that for the time being, there’s no point in unbanning Zoodiac Barrage because without Zoodiac Drident, there’s no reason to even play the Zoodiac deck. Since that deck isn’t overpowered anymore, the unbanning of Zoodiac Barrage without the same happening to Zoodiac Drident was baffling to many.
Collectability-wise, this cards benefits from demographical appeal because it depicts a female character. This gives it a value boost that most cards with a rarity of just Rare might not otherwise get. Additionally, cards of the Zoodiac archetype appeal to completionists as well because they are based on the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac, hence the name of the archetype. Since there will almost certainly never be any new cards of the archetype for that reason, this card is likely to draw further interest based on that.
