[Yu-Gi-Oh TCG] Gimmick Puppet Nightmare (Collectors Pack: ZEXAL Version CPZ1-JP009) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
One of two Branded-adjacent floodgates to be put on Konami's tournament blacklist in the West.
The Branded deck archetype was the one hardest hit by the most recent Yu-Gi-Oh TCG card bans and restrictions applicable to tournaments outside Japan and Asia-Pacific. Two of its primary floodgate cards received total bans—a decision which was generally welcomed by the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG community. One of those two cards was Gimmick Puppet Nightmare.
About Gimmick Puppet Nightmare (Collectors Pack: ZEXAL Version CPZ1-JP009)
Although Gimmick Puppet Nightmare was first released in 2013, it was only recently that the metagame outside Japan and Asia-Pacific had developed in a way that made this card overpowered. This card can be played with the Albion the Sanctifire Dragon card within a Branded deck to force the opponent into situation where the field is so overwhelmingly stacked against the opponent by way of clearly overpowered locks. It’s the same reason behind the ban of Jowgen the Spiritualist, the other such floodgate card to be banned.
Unlike Albion the Sanctifire Dragon, Gimmick Puppet Machine is almost impossible to play around in the vast majority of gameplay scenarios if the setup proceeds as expected. When Special Summoned onto the opponent’s field, Gimmick Puppet Machine prevents the opponent from summoning any monster cards except those of the Gimmick Puppet archetype—a position that in many situations is uncounterable.
As a card featured in Yu-Gi-Oh anime spin-off Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL, Gimmick Puppet Nightmare was included in Collectors Pack: ZEXAL Version. The card’s gameplay viability and now its ban are the main reasons behind any value it has because the card isn’t rare at all—it only comes in Common.
