The recent rise of the Blue Doflamingo deck following new card additions and changes to the ONE PIECE Card Game metagame has led to more people experimenting with that deck and subsequently new variants of it. Of these new variants, one which has begun to see much success in tournament play is the deck variant pioneered by Indonesian player John Alexander; it makes use of two new additions, one of which is the Gion card from Wings of the Captain [OP-06].

About Gion (Wings of the Captain [OP-06] OP06-044)

After the player has played Gion, the player forces the opponent to place a card from the hand at the bottom of the deck whenever the opponent plays an Event card as long as Gion remains in play. This greatly restricts the opponent’s options, leaving the opponent in a position in which Event cards would only be played if this additional cost for doing so would be worth it—often, that will not be the case.

This card works well alongside Gravity Blade Raging Tiger, another card from Wings of the Captain [OP-06] which is already a staple of the Blue Doflamingo deck, as well as the Borsalino card from Awakening of the New Era [OP-05]. This combination brings about the potential to force the opponent to put multiple important cards at the bottom of the deck. The deck variant that uses Gion has a particularly strong matchup against Purple decks. Gion has also seen use in some variants of the Blue Nami deck.

Interestingly, although this card does depict a female character in a somewhat suggestive position, this hasn’t had a significant impact on the card’s value. This is because the card’s low rarity of Uncommon (UC) as well as its lack of an alternate-art form have kept its value low.

The price of a Gion (Wings of the Captain [OP-06] OP06-044) card is very low, coming in at just 110 JPY (~US$0.74).
