When the list of Yu-Gi-Oh TCG card bans and restrictions to come into effect in Japan and Asia-Pacific from 1 October 2024 was released, by far the biggest reaction had to do with not a ban or unban, but a previously unrestricted card which will be semi-restricted in the two regions for the first time in seven years—and even so, back then it was only semi-restricted for three months. The card in question? One which every Yu-Gi-Oh TCG player is familiar with: Maxx “C”.

About Maxx “C” (Rarity Collection Quarter Century Edition RC04-JP005)

It’s difficult to understate the impact that Maxx “C” has had on the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG metagame in Japan and Asia-Pacific (elsewhere, it has been banned since February 2018). Such was the level to which the metagame in the East was centralized around Maxx “C” that essentially every tournament-viable deck was required to have three copies of it in order to be even remotely viable. To the astonishment of players not only outside Japan and Asia-Pacific but that of many players there as well, Konami had never chosen to act on this—until now.

Maxx “C” has always been considered one of the most overpowered cards in the entire Yu-Gi-Oh TCG. Such was its meta-warping effect that in addition to Maxx “C”, players often had to add several other cards to their decks purely to counter the opponent’s Maxx “C” cards. Maxx “C” is especially game-breaking when the player goes first because it allows the player to build a resource advantage while still keeping Maxx “C” in hand if necessary. Thus, players are forced to play through opponents drawing multiple cards via the effect of Maxx “C”. For this reason, most were somewhat dismayed that Maxx “C” only received a semi-restriction in Japan and Asia-Pacific and not a total ban as is the case elsewhere.

From a collector’s standpoint, by far the most coveted Maxx “C” card is the one from Rarity Collection Quarter Century Edition. That card comes in Quarter Century Secret Rare and is the only one of the Maxx “C” cards released since 2011 to have that rarity.
