[Yu-Gi-Oh TCG] Blue-Eyes of the Heart Delivers a Shoutout to the Manga (Rage of the Abyss ROTA-JP004)
Those who first got into Yu-Gi-Oh via the manga will especially be drawn to this card.
Every so often, Konami will release a card replete with references to the Yu-Gi-Oh manga. In the recently released Yu-Gi-Oh TCG Core Booster Rage of the Abyss, that card is Blue-Eyes of the Heart. A Millennium counterpart of the iconic Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Blue-Eyes of the Heart is based on the card owned by manga character Sugoroku Muto.
The name of the card as well as its second effect which prevents possession of the card from being switched refer to Sugoroku’s refusal to sell his copy of Blue-Eyes White Dragon to Seto Kaiba. Sugoroku told Seto that he wouldn’t sell the card due to its sentimental value and that he considered the card to have a heart of its own.
Additionally, the card’s third effect which allows the player to send an opposing monster to the graveyard, then Special Summon this card, if Blue-Eyes of the Heart is already in the player’s own Graveyard and the opponent Normal or Special Summons one or more monsters at Level 8 or higher and/or one or more monsters with 3000 or more ATK refers to the manga as well. This is exactly the sequence that took place in the manga when Seto used it in his duel against Dark Yugi after stealing Sugoroku’s copy of the card.
Finally, the artwork is taken from the same manga chapter while its once-per-duel effect alludes to the fact that Sugoroku had just one copy of the card. All of these manga references are sure to win over long-time Yu-Gi-Oh fans, especially those well-versed with the manga. Of course, it helps that this card comes in Quarter Century Secret Rare form as well.
This card will be released in English along with the rest of Rage of the Abyss on 10 October 2024.
The price of a Quarter Century Secret Rare Blue-Eyes of the Heart (Rage of the Abyss ROTA-JP004) card is 4,000 JPY (~US$26).
