[Pokémon TCG] The “Crossover Episode” Everyone Needed: Luigi Pikachu (XY-P Promotional Cards 295/XY-P)
Because Mario would've been cliché.
Back in 2016, Creatures Inc. worked with Nintendo to create a Pokémon TCG crossover featuring Nintendo’s two most iconic franchises: Mario and Pokémon. Promotional cards depicting Pikachu in Mario and Luigi costumes were released as well—and eight years later, the Luigi version is once again starting to make the rounds.
Launched as one of the XY-P Promotional Cards, this Luigi Pikachu card originally released in the sixth generation has recently gained much popularity and risen rapidly in value. To certify its status as such a card, there’s a “Mario Pikachu” logo printed on the right side of the card.
While all promotional cards are highly desired in their own ways, this one is a particularly interesting case. Despite having been released eight years and three generations ago, this card’s price rose by 45,000 JPY (~US$298) in the past month alone owing to a spike in demand.
The increased demand for this card is likely the result of the annual Mario Day on 10 March (Mar.10). However, that doesn’t completely explain everything—there was also a Mario Pikachu version of this card which didn’t experience a similar surge in demand or price. In any case, this Luigi Pikachu card has, after years of dormancy, become majorly relevant within Pokémon TCG collectors’ circles once again.
This card has not been and will never be released in English.
Following its price increase, a Luigi Pikachu (XY-P Promotional Cards 295/XY-P) card now sells for 185,000 JPY (~US$1,224)!
