Pokémon TCG Pikachu & Zekrom GX

As the iconic mascot of the entire Pokémon franchise, every Pokémon TCG card featuring Pikachu will certainly have its fair share of prospective buyers and then some.

However, on this Pikachu & Zekrom GX card from the Tag Bolt [SM9] expansion set, Creatures Inc. has taken things to the next level by pairing Pikachu with the box Legendary of the Pokémon White video game, forming a Electric-type Pokémon duo appealing to Pokémon fans of different eras.

The majority of kawayoo’s Full Art illustration is taken up by Zekrom. The imposing Deep Black Pokémon is shown channeling its Teravolt ability from the video games—this is implied by the crackling lightning bolts surrounding it. Standing on Zekrom’s back is Pikachu, primed for attack and just about ready to jump off.

However, despite what the image might imply, for the majority of collectors, it’s the electrical rodent that’s the star attraction with Zekrom playing a supporting role. There’s a reason this card is marketed as “Pikachu & Zekrom GX” and not the other way around. Indeed, in many ways it can be said that Zekrom’s presence on the card primarily serves to highlight Pikachu’s.

This Super Rare (SR) card was introduced as one of the first TAG TEAM cards, implying that both Pokémon are about to simultaneously attack the opponent. A new addition to the Pokémon TCG in the Tag Bolt [SM9] expansion, this card’s status as a pioneer of a new gameplay mechanic might bestow it with even more desirability.

This card’s English version is card SM168 from the SM Black Star Promos collection.

One copy of a Pikachu & Zekrom GX (Tag Bolt [SM9] 101/095) card of SR rarity goes for an impressive ¥128,000 (~US$852).
