Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo is a major hub for fans in Japan. Thus, it’s no surprise that it inspired not just one, but two unique promotional cards created by the Pokémon franchise. These two are said to be some of the most sought-after Pikachu cards by collectors: Mega Tokyo’s Pikachu (098/XY-P) and Mega Tokyo’s Pikachu (204/XY-P).

While both promotional cards celebrate the same Pokémon Center location and are even actually the same card in two different prints, they offer distinct differences in artwork, rarity, and method of distribution. Let us dive into the adorable world of the Mega Tokyo’s Pikachu promotional cards.

Mega Tokyo’s Pikachu (098/XY-P)

Pikachu

The first version of Mega Tokyo’s Pikachu (098/XY-P) was distributed to celebrate the relocation of Pokémon Center Tokyo, which moved from its original location in Hamamatsuchō to Ikebukuro in December 2014. This card was only given to customers with any purchase starting from the opening day until 16 January 2015. Featuring Pikachu dressed as Mega Charizard Y, it quickly became an iconic collectible, especially for fans who appreciated the crossover between Pikachu and Mega Evolutions.

Mega Tokyo’s Pikachu: 204/XY-P

Pikachu

The second version of Mega Tokyo’s Pikachu (204/XY-P), released over a year later in January 2016, was a given to participants of the Pokémon Center Mega Battle + Creatures Challenge, which was held at all Pokémon Centers across Japan on 16 and 17 January 2016. On 16 January 2016, a total of 40 participants, regardless of age, were able to join one of three scheduled sessions, resulting in 120 copies of this card being distributed. The following day, (17 January), another 40 participants, this time limited to children of elementary school age or younger, took part in similar sessions, leading to the distribution of an additional 120 copies.

These events took place across four locations: Mega Tokyo, Tokyo Bay, Yokohama, and Osaka. With each venue issuing 240 cards in total, it’s estimated that only 960 copies of the card were released overall. With a limited number being distributed only, this card ranks s one of the rarest Pikachu cards ever printed.

Which Version Should You Collect?

If you’re a collector working with a tight budget, we highly recommend opting for the 098/XY-P version. It’s significantly more affordable and easier to find, thanks to its wider distribution back in 2017. Compared to the rarer and more elusive 204/XY-P, the 098/XY-P offers a much more accessible option for fans looking to add Mega Tokyo’s Pikachu to their collection without breaking the bank.

On the other hand, if you value exclusivity, flexing, and enjoy collecting rare Pokémon TCG cards, the 204/XY-P is the one to pursue. However, tracking down this card as a raw copy or graded PSA 10 can be a real challenge due to its limited release and scarcity in the secondary market.
