Very few Pokémon TCG cards have captured the intersection of art and pop culture as brilliantly as the promotional card from the Munch Exhibition. About Mimikyu (SM-P Promotional Cards 289/SM-P)

Released on October 27, 2018, this card was part of a special collaboration between The Pokémon Company and the “Munch: A Retrospective” exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The exhibition showcased works by the renowned Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, including his iconic painting “The Scream.” The Mimikyu promo card is part of a series of five promotional cards released in conjunction with the “Munch: A Retrospective” collaboration. When arranged in collection number order, each card’s illustration features a silhouette of the preceding card’s Pokémon in the background, creating a cohesive visual narrative.

The Mimikyu promotional card’s artwork, illustrated by Hasuno, draws direct inspiration from Munch’s “The Scream”. The painting depicts Mimikyu in a similar pose against a swirling, expressive background. This design choice pays homage to the painting’s emotional intensity and aligns with Mimikyu’s enigmatic and melancholic character. ​

Due to these limited distribution channels and purchasing restrictions, the Mimikyu promotional card became relatively scarce just like the Pikachu Munch Exhibition promotion card, enhancing its desirability among collectors. Originally distributed through museum-related events and Pokémon Centers in Japan, its rarity has driven high demand among collectors globally. A PSA 10-graded copy of this Mimikyu card often commands premium prices within the secondary market with it hitting four digits figures, solidifying its status as a prized collector’s item.
