One of the oldest Yu-Gi-Oh TCG cards has recently seen an unexpected surge of fan interest, driving up its value significantly as a result. A card originally from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 5: Expert 1 promotional cards back in 2001, it’s since been reprinted three times—but not since 2011. Among all four versions, it’s the Ultimate Rare iteration from 2002 set Duelist Legacy Volume.1 which is the pick of the bunch.

About Dark Sage (Duelist Legacy Volume.1 DL1-000)

A major part of this card’s appeal is its connection to one of the most iconic Yu-Gi-Oh TCG cards of all time—Dark Magician, the signature card of Yu-Gi-Oh anime protagonist Yugi Muto. Canonically, Dark Sage is Dark Magician after having been aged by Time Wizard. What makes this even more interesting is the fact that in the anime, Dark Sage wasn’t an actual card—but Konami chose to make it one in real life.

To further appeal to fans who are well-versed in the Yu-Gi-Oh universe’s lore, this card can only be Special Summoned by Tributing a Dark Magician card immediately after applying the effect of a Time Wizard card assuming the player made the right call on the coin flip. As mentioned, both cards included are directly related to Dark Sage’s backstory. Finally, those who got into Yu-Gi-Oh via the video games might be drawn to this card as well because its original version was one of five promotional cards bundled with purchases of Game Boy Advance video game Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters 5: Expert 1.
