[Pokémon TCG] Hakama Pikachu (SM-P Promotional Cards 208/SM-P) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
One of two promotional cards from the Pokémon Center Tokyo DX Special Box, it was released to commemorate the opening of Pokémon Center Tokyo DX.
The Pokémon Center Tokyo DX Special Box was released on 14 March 2018 in honor of the opening of Pokémon Center Tokyo DX on the same day. Included in the Pokémon Center Tokyo DX Special Box were two promotional seventh-generation Pokémon TCG cards; of the two, by far the bigger get was the Hakama Pikachu card.
About Hakama Pikachu (SM-P Promotional Cards 208/SM-P)
The most obvious thing to notice about this card is the fact that it’s a costumed Pikachu card—historically, those have always been among the most coveted promotional cards of all time; this one is no different in that regard. An image of this same Hakama Pikachu can also be seen on the illustration on the cover of the Pokémon Center Tokyo DX Special Box, adding to the sense that this card was to be tied into a specific event.
Hakama Pikachu is so named because the card’s illustration shows Pikachu in traditional Japanese ceremonial wear for women; Pikachu is wearing a furisode kimono and a hakama. Completing the image is the kinchaku which resembles Bounsweet that Hakama Pikachu is carrying.
Even the name of Pikachu’s first attack indirectly relates to the card. The name of this attack in Japanese is “Gomen Asobase”—an overly formal, antiquated version of “excuse me”, adding to the stereotypical imagery portrayed by the traditional ceremonial wear. Finally, the card was one of a series of promotional cards featuring costumed Pikachu released for Pokémon Center Tokyo DX’s opening; each of those cards was designed to reflect the cultural diversity of Tokyo—a factor that almost certainly jacks up demand for this card.
