The Japanese release date of an upcoming Pokémon TCG dual expansion set has now been confirmed—and this new set is sure to send shockwaves throughout the Pokémon TCG community. The dual set of Black Bolt and White Flare, which launches in Japan on 6 June 2025, has the potential to become one of the most coveted Pokémon TCG sets of all time.
About Black Bolt and White Flare
Black Bolt and White Flare, the first Pokémon TCG dual set since Wild Force [SV5K] and Cyber Judge [SV5M], will feature all 156 Pokémon from the fifth generation; the headliner cards will be a Reshiram and a Zekrom card. Reshiram and Zekrom were the box Legendaries of Gen 5’s Pokémon Black and White video games. The Tao duo will also be featured on the set’s deck boxes and card sleeves.
Black Bolt and White Flare will be the first set to ever be released in English under the same name as its Japanese counterpart. The dual set will also be the first-ever English dual set. English booster packs won’t be able to be purchased individually; they’ll only be sold as part of other related products.
Cards from Black Bolt and White Flare will also have mirror holofoil versions of selected cards including Poké Ball Mirror and Master Ball Mirror versions. This, coupled with the fact that the set includes all the Gen 5 Pokémon, clearly proves that Black Bolt and White Flare will be intended to be a spiritual successor to the iconic Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] set. The last time that mirror holofoil cards were made for selected cards was in Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a].
Every card depicting a Gen 5 Pokémon in Black Bolt and White Flare will have a version in Art Rare (AR) or rarer.
In addition, the idea behind the set is the same as that behind Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] because Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] deliberately played to nostalgia, particularly those of people in their 30s as that would’ve been the age group which grew up with Pokémon’s first generation—the generation around which Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a] was based. In the same vein, Black Bolt and White Flare will likely appeal to those in the 18-25 age bracket as this was the age group which grew up with Gen 5.
In addition to ordinary booster packs, Black Bolt and White Flare will feature Deluxe Packs—giant booster packs containing 35 cards—which will be sold at Pokémon Card Gyms in Japan.
The ordinary sale price for each Deluxe Pack is 1,450 JPY (~US$10); however, those who pre-order one from 29 April 2025 until a date yet to be announced may purchase it at a discounted price of 1,319 JPY (~US$9.30).
Also, to be released on in conjunction with the dual set’s drop will be the Black Bolt & White Flare Card File Set which will contain an unknown number of booster packs, a promotional Victini card, and a binder.
