The six Starter Decks released simultaneously in July 2024 have all had varying impacts on the ONE PIECE Card Game metagame; certain cards in each have gone on to become important parts of various new deck variants. Of these six Starter Decks, probably the one which has had the largest gameplay impact has been the Red Edward Newgate Starter Deck [ST-15]—in particular through two specific cards; one of them is the Thatch card.

About Thatch (Red Edward Newgate [ST-15] ST15-004)

The card depicting the former 4th division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates has proven to be a viable addition to both the Red/Blue Marco deck and the Red Newgate deck. When played, this card allows the player to reduce an opposing Character’s cost by 2000 before granting the player the opportunity to add a Life card to the hand. As such, Thatch functions as a key piece that extends the game and adds survivability to the deck’s Leader card.

Thatch is most advantageous when played in the mid-game, especially when played in conjunction with the Portgas D. Ace card as well as the Edward Newgate Character card also from the Red Edward Newgate Starter Deck [ST-15] (Red/Blue Marco deck) or the Kingdew and Atmos cards from the same Starter Deck (Red Newgate deck). When played in a suitable sequence, these cards force the opponent to burn up more resources, thus likely tilting the state of the board in the player’s favor.
