[Update 7 Jan 2025] This card is now a crucial part of the Regigigas/Pikachu ex deck. It takes advantage of Regigigas’ Ability of Ancient Wisdom to have its Topaz Bolt attack powered up much more rapidly, ideally allowing it to fire off huge hits for 300 damage before the opponent has had a chance to be properly set up.

[Update 4 Dec 2024] The price of the Japanese version of the Pikachu ex card has recently plummeted at an astonishing rate. As of the most recent figures, one such card goes for 35,000 JPY (~US$234). However, the English version from Surging Sparks [SSP] has retained its value as it currently sells for 69,200 JPY (~US$462)—almost double that of its Japanese counterpart.

Meanwhile, on the gameplay front, Pikachu ex has now become an important part of what’s now the most common variant of the Lost Zone Box deck. This new deck variant makes use of the Mirage Gate card from Lost Abyss [S11] to load up Pikachu ex with Energy cards after the player has filled up the Lost Zone, making the devastatingly powerful Topaz Bolt attack’s usually awkward Energy card requirement of Grass/Electric/Steel much simpler to put together.

[Update 28 Nov 2024] This card has now found a niche within the Pokémon TCG metagame as well—it’s a viable supporting piece in the Miraidon ex deck due to its immunity to being one-shotted thanks to Resolute Heart, its Ability. Pikachu ex’s Topaz Bolt attack also deals enough damage to one-shot almost any opponent.

However, Pikachu ex is far more functional as a “sidekick” rather than the centerpiece of a deck because it’s inherently a high-maintenance card that requires a complex setup. In addition, the current metagame is unfavorable towards any deck built around Pikachu ex.

[Update 21 Nov 2024] There appears to be no end in sight with regard to the rising value of this card. The latest figures have shown that the cost of the card’s English version continues to balloon; in less than two weeks since the card’s release as part of Surging Sparks [SSP], its value has risen to 76,300 JPY (~US$492).

[Update 15 Nov 2024] It’s now become obvious that this card is a seriously epic pull—its price has again skyrocketed. The price of a Pikachu ex (Super Electric Breaker [SV8] 132/106) has now climbed to 60,000 JPY (~US$383); this means that its value has more than doubled in just under a month—and from a fairly high starting point at that.

Not only that—the recently-released English version of this card from Surging Sparks [SSP] has already topped its Japanese counterpart’s value despite only having been around for a week so far. The English version of Pikachu ex (Surging Sparks [SSP] 238/191) as a PSA 10 card goes for 65,000 JPY (~US$415) as of the latest price updates.

As a result, booster packs and boxes related to Super Electric Breaker [SV8] and Surging Sparks [SSP] are anticipated to experience a price increase largely on the back of this one card.

[Update 7 Nov 2024] Although this card has only been around for a short time, it’s already seen a huge price spike. As of the latest figures, a Pikachu ex (Super Electric Breaker [SV8] 132/106) card in its PSA 10 form now sells for as much as 43,000 JPY (~US$278).

Pokémon TCG Pikachu ex

When Pokémon TCG set Super Electric Breaker [SV8] was first announced back in April, it was mentioned that the set’s headliner would be a Terastallized Pikachu ex card. Now that the set is out, that Pikachu ex card is now being sold—and it absolutely lives up to the hype.

About Pikachu ex (Super Electric Breaker [SV8] 132/106)

This Special Art Rare (SAR) card depicts the Terastallized version of Pikachu ex; the ordinarily Electric-type Pokémon has Terastallized into the Stellar type. The card’s holofoil adds visual impact by making it seem as though sunlight is streaming down and reflecting off the Tera Jewels over Pikachu ex’s head, highlighting the fact that it’s now a Terastallized Stellar-type Pokémon.

Being the face of the entire Pokémon franchise, cards that depict Pikachu are frequently major pulls; this is even more so with this card because Creatures Inc. had already teased it as the biggest get of the whole set months before its release. The card’s illustration by GIDORA also makes use of an art style seldom seen on a Pokémon TCG card but which is nonetheless a perfect fit for the card’s general vibe and aesthetic.
