A Nod to the NIGO x Nike Collection

After the whole lawsuit saga, it's nice to see The Swoosh partner up with NIGO to drop a collection that pays homage to the latter's roots.

Early last year Nike filed a lawsuit against BAPE, claiming that they ripped off iconic designs like the Air Force 1 and Dunk. The lawsuit brought to light the once-proposed licensing deal The Swoosh offered to BAPE. It also highlighted how creativity, originality, and inspiration all share a fine line. It was a stark reminder of the responsibility that creators bear; an onus to Steal Like an Artist (Austin Kleon).

The lawsuit was settled in June this year. As part of the settlement, BAPE can no longer sell shoes resembling the Air Force 1 Mid, Air Jordan 1 Low, and Air Jordan 1 High. Additionally, BAPE will discontinue sales of the BAPE STA Mid, Court STA, and Court STA High sneakers, and also be required to modify the designs of the BAPE STA and SK8 STA models.

But after all’s been said and done—much to the delight of fans of either brand—relations between them haven’t soured. NIGO, the creative mind behind BAPE, recently released a NIGO x Nike Collection. The centerpiece of the collaboration between the duo is the Air Force 3 in various iterations, which arrives alongside an accouterment of apparel.

The collection is a testament to NIGO’s enduring passion for film, music, and cultural traditions. This partnership encapsulates the namesake’s decades-long career, reflecting his diverse influences and celebrating the intersection of various cultures.

Seeing the two behemoths unite after their saga is heartwarming. This time, NIGO and Nike work together while respecting each others’ intellectual property. And here’s the fruit:

The NIGO x Nike Collection

The NIGO x Nike Collection comprises the Nike Air Force 3 in various iterations, alongside an apparel collection.

NIGO x Nike Air Force 3

The magnum opus of the collection, the NIGO x Nike Air Force 3, arrives in a few colorways. It made its debut in “Multi-Color”, also known as “White”, then “Blue Void”, before surfacing in “Light British Tan” and “Escape”.

The Nike x NIGO Air Force 3 boasts a premium construction, combining genuine leather, textile, and embossed leather for a luxurious finish. The iconic midsole foam and rubber outsole remain true to the original AF3, ensuring both comfort and durability. The tongue and heel feature graphics that pay tribute to the classic sneaker and Nigo’s rich cultural inspirations.

Then, there’s the exclusive packaging. A special box showcases the inspiration behind the initial colorway and offers a glimpse into future collaborations. Inside, premium patches and pins complement the first release.

As Nigo himself explains, “Nike has so many great products. The AF3 is a hidden gem that I loved at the time. I wanted to reintroduce its greatness through my first collaboration with Nike.”

NIGO x Nike Men’s Varsity Jackets

Inspired by the colorful world of 1990s Japanese television, the NIGO x Nike Varsity Jacket infuses a classic silhouette with a playful Super Sentai vibe. Its thick wool body is adorned with vibrant hues, juxtaposed against soft, premium leather sleeves and a quilted satin lining that stay true to the varsity aesthetic. The dual branding subtly peeks through the pattern. Chenille patches, chain stitch embroidery, and satin-stitched leather elevate the unique logos on the design.

NIGO x Nike Men’s Fleece Crew Neck Sweatshirt

Also drawing inspiration from the colorful world of 1990s Japanese television, the Nike x NIGO fleece sweatshirt combines vibrant hues with a classic silhouette, hinting at a Super Sentai hero influence. Its thick, brushed fleece fabric is incredibly soft and maintains a structured shape. Stretchy ribbed cuffs, collar, and hem ensure a comfortable fit. The relaxed design makes it easy to layer and wear comfortably.

NIGO x Nike Men’s T-Shirts

Unlike the vibrant style of the other tops, the NIGO x Men’s T-Shirts embrace a more minimalist approach. Featuring a simple NIGO Swoosh at the center of the chest, the design is clean and understated. With a relaxed fit and available in black and white, these t-shirts are versatile, ideal for layering or wearing on their own.

And it seems that NIGO and Nike aren’t stopping here, so be sure to expect more from the duo in time to come.

Nigo says, “When I decided to partner with Nike, I visited Nike’s headquarters and got a lot of inspiration from the archives, the lab, and the team working there. Everything I saw had a big influence on this project. There’s a lot more to come, so I hope you’ll look forward to Nike and Nigo’s project. This long and exciting journey has just begun.”
