Prior to the launch of Two Legends [OP-08], not many in the ONE PIECE Card Game community were expecting Shandian warrior Kalgara to be featured on a Leader card, let alone have its deck emerge as a genuine force in the metagame. As things have turned out, though, the deck has continued to achieve impressive results in Flagship Battle and other tournaments in Japan and Singapore; it’s also started to make headway in tournaments in the West.

Strategy

This fast-paced deck’s early-game plays mainly involve a pair of searcher cards from Awakening of the New Era [OP-05]: Shura and Upper Yard. Although their card-drawing capabilities are locked to Sky Island cards, this deck is mainly comprised of such cards; this makes it relatively easy for the player to obtain the necessary cards for the ongoing situation. The main options to be drawn usually include Awakening of the New Era [OP-05] cards Ohm and Holly as well as a pair of Two Legends [OP-08] cards: the Kalgara Character card and the Wyper card.

Of these cards, the Ohm card is to be played first; this then allows Holly and then Wyper to be played all on the same turn. This allows the player to deal serious damage in the early to mid-game; later on, the Kalgara card makes use of the deck’s Leader effect to unleash serious damage. For additional tankiness, these cards can be paired with El Thor from Awakening of the New Era [OP-05] and The Earth Will Not Lose! from Two Legends [OP-08]; both cards add to the attackers’ maximum Power totals, either keeping them alive or allowing them to continue the aggression according to the in-game scenario.

When mulliganing, the cards to prioritize are Shura and Upper Yard for card-drawing purposes as well as Ohm and Wyper which enable this deck to push the tempo and set the rapid pace at which this deck thrives.

The biggest challenge for this deck is the Red Zoro deck because the Yellow Kalgara deck’s self-inflicted damage puts it at a clear disadvantage against the Red Zoro deck. To counter this, it’s crucial to attack the opponent’s rested Characters in order to blunt the opposing deck’s aggression. It’s also helpful to prioritize KO’ing the opponent’s Kid & Killer card from the Extra Booster Memorial Collection [EB-01] to prevent it from taking advantage of its power boost. Tony Tony Chopper from Two Legends [OP-08] is another important target; when in play, that card allows the opponent to play additional Character cards when attacking.

The cumulative price of all the cards in the Yellow Kalgara deck is 7,740 JPY (~US$53).
