Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity has been banned from Yu-Gi-Oh TCG tournaments in Japan and the rest of Asia-Pacific since January 2024. The card was banned due to its ability to prevent the opponent from making any plays at all. Unsurprisingly, many outside those regions longed for the card to be banned internationally as well; their wish has now been granted as Konami has banned Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity from tournament play in the rest of the world as well.

About Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity (Structure Deck: Pulse of the King Rumbling of Heaven and Earth Pack SD46-JPP03)

When Hot Red Dragon Archfiend King Calamity is Synchro Summoned on the opponent’s turn, the opponent is left unable to activate cards or effects on the field. In addition, the opponent cannot activate cards or effects in response to that effect’s activation. It essentially functions as a turn skip this way and is extremely difficult to play around. This is known as the infamous “Calamity Lock” which has been the bane of many players’ tournament experiences ever since this card’s introduction in Structure Deck: Pulse of the King Rumbling of Heaven and Earth Pack.

This card’s global ban is in line with those imposed on similar locking cards. Other examples of locking cards which are banned worldwide include Number 16: Shock Master from The Valuable Book 14 promotional cards (January 2016 in Japan/Asia Pacific / September 2013 elsewhere), True King of All Calamities from Maximum Crisis (October 2021 in Japan/Asia Pacific / March 2021 elsewhere), and Number S0: Utopic ZEXAL from 20th Legendary Collection (October 2020 in Japan/Asia Pacific / March 2021 elsewhere).
