[Pokémon TCG] Clefairy (SM-P Promotional Cards 381/SM-P) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
A promotional card with so much demand that it completely overshadowed its regular counterpart from Dream League [SM11b].
When seventh-generation Pokémon TCG set Dream League [SM11b] was first released, its Clefairy card was a rather ordinary, nondescript card which many would easily have overlooked. However, everything changed when that card received a promotional reprint.
About Clefairy (SM-P Promotional Cards 381/SM-P)
An alternate-art promotional version of the Clefairy card originally from Dream League [SM11b], this card features a Full Art illustration depicting Clefairy alongside Lillie, one of the major characters from the Pokémon Sun and Moon video games of Gen 7. In addition to the usual “female character boost”, Lillie holds an iconic position in the history of the Pokémon TCG. The Extra Battle Day promotional version of the Lillie card is one of the rarest and most expensive Pokémon TCG cards of all time.
The popularity of Clefairy itself shouldn’t be overlooked either. It should be noted that before Nintendo settled on Pikachu, Clefairy had been originally planned to be the face of the Pokémon franchise. Additionally, although this card doesn’t require any Fairy-type Energy cards to attack, the card was taken from the brief period when Fairy-type Pokémon such as Clefairy had an Energy symbol to themselves, giving this card “throwback” appeal.
The illustration also shows Clefairy pointing in the direction of the arrow on the signpost in the background. This is likely a direct reference to Clefairy’s Follow Me attack which in the video games redirects all attacks directed at the Pokémon alongside Clefairy to Clefairy itself. This detail is likely to impress many who are into the video games—especially because Follow Me is a staple attack choice in high-level Pokémon video game tournament play.
