[Pokémon TCG] Poncho-wearing Pikachu “Rayquaza” (XY-P Promotional Cards 230/XY-P) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
This isn't the "Flying Pikachu" you might be thinking of.
Among the most valuable of all the Poncho-wearing Pikachu promotional Pokémon TCG cards of the sixth generation is the one which features Pikachu dressed as a Rayquaza. Initially launched as part of the Rayquaza Poncho-wearing Pikachu Special Box in July 2016, this card soon became one of the generation’s most sought-after cards.
About Poncho-wearing Pikachu (XY-P Promotional Cards 230/XY-P)
This card has a Full Art illustration on which the card’s holofoil is clearly visible by way of the sparkles in the background. Augmenting the visual impact of the card while also adding a touch which is sure to impress long-time Pokémon is the inclusion of yellow circles that cover much of the background. These yellow circles resemble Rayquaza’s body markings. Adding to this is the blue background which likely alludes to the fact that Rayquaza dwells in the sky.
The timing of the card’s release was also relevant to its popularity and value. At the time of its launch, the most recent Pokémon video games were Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Gen 6 remakes of third-generation games Ruby and Sapphire. In the post-game storyline, Rayquaza plays a major role; this additional storyline is unique to the remakes—it wasn’t present in Ruby and Sapphire.
The card also references the fact that it’s not actually Rayquaza because one of its attacks is printed as “Fly?” with a question mark. Finally, this card is of much appeal to completionists who intend to collect the entire set of Poncho-wearing Pikachu cards.
