Whitney is one of the most iconic Gym Leaders in the history of Pokémon. This is because more than two decades after her debut in Pokémon Gold and Silver, the main-series video games of Pokémon’s second generation, she is still regarded as one of the most difficult boss fights in the games’ history. As such, it’s somewhat to be expected that Pokémon TCG cards depicting her would be in much demand.

The nostalgia factor does play a major role in this seventh-generation card’s popularity—though not in the usual way in which one might expect. Countless Pokémon fans over the years have anguished over the Goldenrod Gym Leader and her Miltank which has served as a major roadblock to millions of new players, Nuzlockers, and so many others.

This is also, of course, a Super Rare (SR) card featuring a Full Art illustration of a female character—thus, it carries inherent demographic appeal. There’s also a detail alluding to the video games. The hearts in the background reference the fact that upon her defeat, Whitney gives the player the Technical Machine (TM) for Attract in addition to her Gym badge.
