In August 2019, pre-orders for the Japanese-only Limited Collection Master Battle Set began to be taken. This product, which eventually made its way to buyers in December 2019, was created to be Creatures Inc.’s send-off to the seventh generation of the Pokémon TCG. The Limited Collection Master Battle Set came with two promotional cards, one of which was this Pikachu card.

About Pikachu (SM-P Promotional Cards 400/SM-P)

The card’s Full Art illustration depicts the face of the Pokémon franchise unleashing its Thunder Shock attack with Buzzwole, Tapu Lele, and Zekrom in the background. Buzzwole and Tapu Lele’s presence in the illustration is apt for a card bringing the curtain down on Gen 7 because Ultra Beast Buzzwole and guardian deity Legendary Tapu Lele were among the standouts of the Pokémon introduced in the seventh generation.

This card is actually a Full Art reprint of a prior promotional card. The earlier card was first made available in the Toys “R” Us Limited Eevee-GX Battle Triple Starter Set in November 2018 in Japan and in the Unified Minds Single Pack Blisters internationally in August 2019.

Much of this card’s value is derived from its exclusivity; the Limited Collection Master Battle Set in which this card originally came could only be pre-ordered from Pokémon Centers in Japan as well as the Pokémon Center Online. Of course, any promotional card that features Pikachu is certain to be a major acquisition as well.

This card has recently seen an enormous price spike. Over recent weeks, the price of this card has increased almost sevenfold. This could be linked to the upcoming Pokémon World Championships which will be held in Hawaii from 16-18 August 2024; the Alola region where Gen 7 was set, as can likely be figured out by its name, is based on Hawaii.

Release Details

The Full Art version of this card was only ever released in Japanese.

Following its recent price spike, a copy of a Pikachu (SM-P Promotional Cards 400/SM-P) card sells for 126,000 JPY (~US$843).
