[ONE PIECE Card Game] The Cover Card Lives Up to the Hype: Monkey D. Luffy (500 Years in the Future [OP07-109])

Not exactly the image that most people associate with Luffy—but at least it's thematically consistent.

ONE PIECE Card Game Monkey D. Luffy

Long before the official release of 500 Years in the Future [OP-07], the ONE PIECE Card Game set based on the manga’s ongoing Egghead Arc, it was already known what would be the cover card of the set. Every 500 Years in the Future [OP-07] booster pack and booster box bears the image of the set’s Super Rare Parallel (SR-P) Monkey D. Luffy card.

Being the set’s cover card, this card inherently came with a certain level of general fan interest. In addition, the Parallel Art illustration alludes to Luffy’s role within the Egghead Arc. Luffy is shown wearing his SSG outfit; this alludes to the fact that the Straw Hat Pirates fought alongside the SSG during what’s known in-universe as the Egghead Incident.

Luffy’s fist is also seen extended. Of course, this is a reference to his iconic Gum-Gum attacks—though in this case it’s unclear just which one he’s unleashing.

The background of the illustration contains a further allusion to the futuristic nature of Egghead Island. The patterns across the back of the illustration resemble those found on a semiconductor. This is also a reference to the nature of Punk Records where the entirety of Vegapunk’s brain is stored; Punk Records is intended to function in-universe in a similar way to how the Internet works in real life.

This card’s English version is already out.

A copy of a Monkey D. Luffy (500 Years in the Future [OP07-109]) card with a rarity of SR-P sells for 3,000 JPY (~US$19).
