[Pokémon TCG] Rainbow in the Dark: Umbreon & Darkrai GX (Tag All Stars [S12a] 215/173)
"No sign of the morning coming—you've been left on your own like a rainbow in the dark." - Dio
Some of the most coveted Pokémon TCG cards ever have been a specific type of Hyper Rare (HR) card known as “Rainbow Rares”. One glance at a Rainbow Rare makes it obvious how that nickname was acquired—the card’s illustration is completely covered in rainbow-colored hues that even supersede the color palette of the featured Pokémon. The Umbreon & Darkrai GX card from Tag All Stars [SM12a] has emerged as one of the Rainbow Rares that’s recently been in much demand.
The first thing to note is the fact that the card features Umbreon. Even though all eight Eeveelutions are highly popular among the Pokémon fanbase as a whole, the Dark-type Eeveelution is arguably the biggest fan favorite of them all. Darkrai, meanwhile, also carries much fan appeal—in part due to its status as a Mythical Pokémon and the lore that surrounds it; in part due to its roles in the Pokémon anime movie The Rise of Darkrai as well as the spin-off video game Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness.
In addition to the popularity of the two Pokémon shown on the card, there’s also an additional aesthetic and narrative element in play. Umbreon and Darkrai are positioned in such a way to imply an “apprentice and master” dynamic—fitting as they’re both Dark-types with close canonical links to the moon.
While there is an English version of an Umbreon & Darkrai GX card, it isn’t the Rainbow Rare version.
The latest prices place an Umbreon & Darkrai GX (Tag All Stars [S12a] 215/173) Rainbow Rare card at 25,000 JPY (~US$162).
